“You choose way too many black and white photographs. It becomes a bit of a bore. ” That’s the reaction of my other half after he recently looked at my pictures. We clearly had a disagreement.
For black and white pictures, I can better reflect what I saw when I took the picture. The lines, the light, the composition. No distracting colors. Only clear forms, light and shadow, an almost palpable texture, …
When I choose color, I have my standards. All the colors should be in a certain shade or there should be a great contrast between them. Also the combination of hot and cold artificial light can be beautiful; or the blue shadow interrupted by red sunlight at dusk; or all black and white tones and only the tone of the skin that shows that it is not a black and white photo.
The last days I added some color pictures, even though I’d rather see the “colorless” version. Now I scare myself whether this is a smart thing to do: act on the feedback from someone who is actually color blind.
